Regret.
The most hated word in the English dictionary

The biggest word I hate in the English dictionary is the word: Regret.
I hate the word, the feeling, everything around it.
To regret is to feel sorry or unhappy about something you did or were unable to do.
We all have a few regrets in our lives perhaps:
‘I wish I spent more time with my friends in school’
‘I should have written that exam’
'I should have applied for that job’
If you notice a pattern in the three examples I gave above, it’s that we regret NOT doing things rather than doing stuff.
We would so much rather wish we did certain things, and have certain experiences, instead of regretting doing something.
We regret NOT doing, rather than doing.
Of course, there are exceptions.
But the truth is—even if it’s something embarrassing or risky, in a few years you will be reciting the story and laughing about it.
Since most of my audience are between 18-23, consider this:
There’s a really pretty girl in your class.
You like this girl, wanting to talk to her.
But you never decide to act on it because you assume a girl that pretty isn’t gonna talk back to someone like you. So you leave it there.
Years later, turns out she liked you back, and you regret not approaching her.
In a parallel universe, you approach to talk to her thinking ‘What’s the worst that can happen?’
She turns you down and publicly humiliates you in front of the whole class.
Really bad day. You regret talking to her.
But a few years down the line, you’re around a campfire with your family, reminiscing about the time when you got your first rejection. Everyone has a good laugh and you think to yourself, ‘I’m glad I did that.’
Shitty things happen to us all the time. At the worst possible times even.
That’s life.
If we knew everything that was gonna happen, we wouldn’t be living life anymore.
Life would be ‘living’ us.
Like how a character in a game is predestined to win in the end.
Sure, you know you get to win, but when you actually do get to the end, you’ll be like ‘What now?’ ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The point is, if you get a chance to do something you don’t usually do, do it.
Take that risk.
Start a business.
Talk to that girl.
Apply for that job.
Do the things you wouldn’t normally do.
Because trust me, you would much rather go through a bad experience, rather than not have an experience at all.
At least then you would know what NOT to do. That’s a win in my books.
The feeling of wondering what could have been will kill me a thousand times over the feeling of a bad experience.
The single greatest question you will ask yourself at the end of your life is,
What if…?
What if I took that job?
What if I went all in on that business idea?
What if I actually…took action.
We don’t know what the future holds for us.
As much as we like to know, we simply do not.
Life has it’s way of screwing you over at the most unexpected times, sometimes all at once.
We never truly know what happens when we reach that crossroads.
We could never know beforehand what would happen if we chose one road over the other.
But there’s only one way to find out.
Live it. Only time will tell.
David Goggins said this on a podcast with Chris Williamson.
I’m paraphrasing so bear with me:
At the end of your lives, let’s say God brings you to heaven and shows you a mirror.
In the mirror is a person, you.
But it’s not just you, it’s the best version of you.
It’s the version of you that did everything he actually wanted to do.
It’s the version of you that actually gave his best.
It’s the version of you that took the risks.
It’s probably also the version that failed the most number of times.
But it’s the version of you that prevailed.
God says ‘This is who you could’ve become.’
What will you feel in that moment?
Would you be able to be make peace with the life you lived?
- David Goggins
You are in danger of living a life so comfortable and soft that you will die without ever realizing your true potential.
Time flies.
Take that step. Have faith.
Just do it.
My life motto?
No Regrets.
